What is a Daith Piercing?
A Daith piercing (pronounced Day-th or Doth) goes through the innermost fold of the ear, just above the ear canal. When pierced correctly, the jewelry appears to emerge directly from the ear canal. The most commonly used jewelry for this piercing is a 14-gauge Captive Bead Ring (CBR), which promotes optimal healing before introducing more intricate designs.
Why Are Daith Piercings So Popular?
Daith piercings have always been celebrated for their unique placement and stylish appeal. Their rise in popularity is largely due to claims that they can cure or alleviate migraines. Around 2015, blogs and social media exploded with anecdotes from individuals who believed their Daith piercing had reduced or even eliminated their migraines.
As a professional piercer, I must emphasize that we are not physicians, acupuncturists, or medically trained professionals. It is unethical for any piercer to claim that this piercing has proven medical benefits. While I understand the desperation that migraine sufferers feel (as I am a sufferer myself), it is crucial to be cautious of those who promote Daith piercings as a miracle cure.
That being said, Daith piercings are undeniably striking. They suit most ear anatomies and even accommodate multiple piercings in some cases. There’s no denying their aesthetic appeal, but let’s discuss their supposed medical benefits.
What is a Migraine?
According to the NHS:
“A migraine is usually a moderate or severe headache felt as a throbbing pain on one side of the head. Many people also have symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and increased sensitivity to light or sound.”
Migraines affect approximately 1 in 5 women and 1 in 15 men and can occur with varying frequency. Some sufferers experience warning signs (aura), while others do not. Migraines can be unpredictable, making the search for effective relief all the more frustrating.

Where Did the Theory Come From?
The claim that Daith piercings can help migraines comes from acupuncture principles. The idea is that piercing a specific pressure point in the ear could provide continuous stimulation, making repeated acupuncture sessions unnecessary. Some studios have capitalized on this theory, marketing Daith piercings as a medical treatment. Unfortunately, many of these claims lack support from professional piercers or medical experts.
Can a Daith Piercing Actually Help?
There is currently no scientific evidence to confirm that Daith piercings cure or reduce migraines. While it’s not impossible that they could help in some cases, it remains highly improbable.
However, several factors might contribute to perceived benefits:
The Placebo Effect: The power of belief is incredible. If someone strongly believes their piercing will help, they may experience real symptom relief due to expectation. Positive affirmations and mindset shifts can influence physical well-being in surprising ways.
Self-Empowerment: Getting a new piercing can boost confidence and self-image. For those who feel helpless in the face of chronic migraines, taking action—whether or not it has a medical basis—can be psychologically beneficial.
They’re Just Awesome Piercings: Even if they don’t cure migraines, Daith piercings are undeniably beautiful. Many people enjoy them purely for their aesthetic appeal and report feeling happier simply because they love their new adornment.
I Still Want One. Will You Pierce My Daith?
Absolutely! Your body, your choice. I will gladly perform a Daith piercing for you—but with full transparency. I cannot, in good conscience, claim that it will help your migraines, nor will I attempt to place it according to acupuncture points. This would compromise the integrity of the piercing.
The Next Step: Understanding Your Choices
Before deciding on a Daith piercing, consider your motivations. If you're looking for a stylish accessory to express your individuality, a Daith piercing may be an excellent choice.
However, if you're aiming for pain relief, it's essential to consult with a healthcare professional first. Exploring traditional treatments or alternative therapies may offer solutions without the uncertainties associated with the claims surrounding Daith piercings.
Final Thoughts
Daith piercings are stunning and satisfying to perform, but I urge caution when considering them as a medical solution. While I deeply wish we piercers had healing hands, we must acknowledge our limitations. We are here to provide beautiful, safe, and ethical piercings—not to offer false hope.
